Effective and sustained action to prevent and reduce homelessness, especially among the “hidden homeless”, is the key message of National Homeless Persons Week, 5-11 August 2013.
“The majority of this State’s homeless are young people, women escaping domestic violence, vulnerable families and their children and poor single adults.” said Gary Moore, CEO of Homelessness NSW
“They are couch surfing, living in massively overcrowded private rental dwellings, hidden away in boarding houses or clients of homelessness services with few places to go”
“Our biggest challenges are to prevent homelessness ever happening in the first place and to ensure that time spent on the street or in marginal housing or in homelessness services is as short as possible with few repeat episodes”
