The Footpath Library (TFL) was founded over 10 years ago with a simple mission – to bring the joy of books to people experiencing homelessness. Since its humble beginnings – literally a scattering of books on the footpath – TFL has grown to serve over 100 homelessness providers in four cities and over 300 individuals each month at its mobile services in Sydney and Perth.
Over the last few years TFL has faced challenges in securing funding necessary to ensure the ongoing viability and success of the organisation. In 2017, that challenge has been especially difficult to overcome. Our Board has had to think carefully about TFL’s future, and how we can continue to serve those in need with an ever-dwindling budget.
The difficult decision has been made by the Board to restructure TFL’s operations. This will enable us to reassess TFL’s potential and work towards a model which will generate ongoing funding and future growth.
The proposed restructure entails ceasing our hostel library operations and continuing our existing mobile services in Sydney and Perth. From 30th August 2017 TFL will no longer have staff, contractors or an office and will revert to being entirely volunteer run.
Over the next several months the Board will look at our existing model and review our strategy with a view to launching a new look TFL within 12 months.
