Speaking on behalf of the judging panel, chair Emily Maguire, said,
“The range of responses to the theme ‘Home is…’ was impressive and the shortlists reflect this: Home is…a place of safety or of secret danger; an ever-shifting idea or hard, solid ground; something made of memories or of familiar flesh; something worth fighting for or something best left behind.
Although some of the stories, particularly in the Secondary category, explore the darker side of the theme, including abuse, dispossession and homelessness, it’s impossible to read through the entries without feeling a sense of hope. These young writers are full of curiosity about the world and empathy for those living in it and many display real emotional maturity and intellectual agility.”
