Recently, Hachette Australia and Knit4Charities gave us books and hand-knitted items for the beautiful women at Carrie’s Place and Jenny’s Place, in the Hunter NSW. We were able to deliver a supply of books and hand-knitted beanies, scarves and knee blankets for the winter months.
Carrie’s Place provides a range of culturally appropriate services for people experiencing domestic and family violence and/or homelessness in the Maitland and Lower Hunter areas of NSW, and have done so since 1979. Carrie’s Place was set up by a group of local women who wanted to help support women experiencing domestic violence.
Jenny’s Place offers a range of services to women and children who are experiencing domestic violence and/or homelessness, or are at risk of homelessness. Jenny’s Place was established in 1979 by a group of passionate women who wanted to ensure women and children who experience domestic and family violence had a safe place and support.
Estimates based on the latest ABS Census data (2021), found homelessness in Australia has increased by 5.2 per cent over the last five years, with women driving most of the growth, and domestic violence is the leading cause of homelessness for women. Since 2016, the number of women and girls experiencing homelessness in Australia grew by approximately 10 per cent.
